Govan Graving Docks Student Design Competition

The Competition

CDPI and Govan Docks Regeneration Trust are running a design competition, with the University of Strathclyde, for final year degree architecture students to produce masterplan concepts for the regeneration of Govan Graving Docks.

We developed a broad brief for the competition that is running during the 2018-19 academic year.

We would like to hear from professional architects interested in taking part in a judging panel or steering group, as well as hosts who can potentially provide venues for a series of public exhibitions this summer.

The direct relevance of the current competition to developing a masterplan for the graving docks has been altered by the emergence of proposals we are endorsing for returning the docks to use for ship repair.

However the competition will feed into the conversation that Govan Docks Regeneration Trust is continuing to develop about uses for the public parts of the graving docks site. CDPI will continue to support Govan Docks Regeneration Trust through the completion of this year's competition and the charity may organise further design competions for the docks.

Design Competition

Public Exhibition

The design competition entries will be displayed in a public venue (or series of venues) to enable community and stakeholder feedback. This feedback along with the competition entries will be used by Govan Docks Regeneration Trust to inform the conversation about future use of the public areas of the graving docks site.

Judging and Awards

The competition judging will run separately from any academic assessment of the students' work. The results will also not have a direct single influence on the development of a formal masterplan - with the final masterplan brief potentially taking in a range of the students' ideas.

We aim to introduce a range prizes for winner and runner up students and are in the process of seeking sponsors who will be able to provide these. Awards may include cash prizes, non-cash prizes, career development support, internships, etc.
